Tools: Prezi, Krita

Tasks: Mechanics Design, Art/Game Layout, Testing

This project was created after a series of smaller exercises analysing and modifying the rules of chess, testing potential additions and variations, and how it effects the strategy. From that came the task of creating an original game from the same basic foundation.

After a round of early concepting of other potential mechanics I settled on the design of attacking/defending a stronghold. Early drafts before the prototyping phase considered a single target, but this would make defending too easy, so I set up two targets for testing.

Initial testing feedback necessitated changing the presentation for clearer and easier understanding of rules. Following several rounds of testing, having now acclimatised to the system, it became apparent that either the mechanics or setup needed refinement to increase the strategic focus. The minimised options for player actions and respawn mechanic greatly simplified the strategic element, leading to games being too fast and unfocussed. My solution was to increase the size of the board, making movement and positioning a greater consideration, and making it impossible to completely defend both strongholds.
